Culturally Responsive Pedagogy

Every aspect of the UACM program (e.g. curriculum and instruction, classroom management) is guided by a pedagogical approach in which teachers are responsive to their students by incorporating elements of their students’ culture in their teaching.

Culturally Relevant Pedagogy (Ladson-Billings) rests on three propositions:

  1. Students must experience academic success.
  2. Students must develop and/or maintain cultural competence.
  3. Students must develop a critical consciousness through which they challenge the status quo of the current social order.
